I'm ready if you're ready

sorry i haven't blogged in a couple days. Sunday afternoon I got really sick [like, lay in a coma watching made-for-tv movies on the Disney Channel sick], I spent Monday traveling back to the future, Tuesday I tracked down my luggage [again], and today I went back to work.

in lieu of posting original thoughts, I've decided to post this Allison Weiss video.

she's really cool [trust me, I'm a good judge of these things]. check her out here.

hanging out with the paparazzi

Today I experienced another side of LA- paparazzi and celebrities! Earlier this week, I heard Heidi and Spencer from The Hills were getting married this weekend in Pasadena. Since a) I'm staying around the corner from the church and b) I LOVE The Hills (I've watched since Laguna Beach started), I decided to check it out.

The MTV crews were there, the paparazzi were there, fans were there- it was crazy. Some of the paparazzi were up on the roof across the street, and I got to talk to a few while we waited. Spencer hired a skywriter to say "Spencer loves Heidi" and "Heidi's album #1 on itunes" haha. He came out before the wedding to take pictures of it and posed for some pictures. He seemed really nice. Then guests showed up- the Hills cast (including LC), Khloe and Kortney Kardashian, Kristin Cavallari, Perez Hilton. That was really cool. Then after the wedding, we got to see them film Heidi and Spencer coming out of the church. It was interesting that a lot of celebs left before Heidi and Spencer came out. But yeah, it was really neat to get to experience that.

I also had Pinkberry for the first time, and Wahoo's fish tacos. Pinkberry= amazing, wahoo's= eh. Tomorrow is Larchmont, Ketchup, and packing to go home.

"Spread my track like corn in the cornfield!"

I don't know if it's because yesterday was meltdown city, but today was exponentially better. This morning I wandered up and down Hollywood Blvd. I got attacked by Jason Voorhees (pics later), saw that Marilyn Monroe is still alive (and looking rough at 90), and I also got my jams on with two rappers- one from Indiana, and the other was celebrating his birthday. I made him prove it, and he did. Then we danced on Hollywood Blvd. After that, I snagged some great shirts at American Apparel. I came back to the hotel and got a call that my luggage was downstairs! A Christmas miracle!

Tonight I went to a forum at Fuller, and let me tell you what- they are BRILLIANT. Wow. I was so impressed and challenged. I also was shocked because I was talking with some people around me and found out that one girl was from Elkhart. BANANAS! Even more bananas- my dad was her 6th grade teacher! So that was nice to have someone familiar around (even though we didn't know each other). We're going to explore LA on Sunday, so that's cool.

Now I'm back at the hotel again, watching SATC, drinking Starbucks, and thinking about everything I heard tonight. I'm seriously in awe about how brilliant everyone was. It was so challenging. Tomorrow is part 2, so that'll be good, and then I'm going to be a tourist and head over to a church in Pasadena because supposedly Spencer and Heidi from "The Hills" are getting married there. I love The Hills- I'm not embarrassed. So I'm going to check that out along with swarms of paparazzi :) you know, because it's LA. Then I'm going to probably check out Hollywood Forever, a cemetery where a lot of celebrities are buried (Charlie Chaplin, Johnny Ramone, Alfred Hitchcock, Marilyn Monroe, and I think Jimi Hendrix has a memorial there, among others). I may end up in Little Tokyo though, because I want to pick up something cool for my brother. It's all up in the air though.

Also, The Hat= tasty pastrami ("world famous"), but so not good for you. I watched some guy eat a tray of fries with 4 cups of chili and 2 cups of cheese, and he washed it down with a 2 liter. I almost puked. Don't ever do that, okay? Thanks.

Quote of the day: "the goal (in ministry) is not to see through you, but see you through." Love it.

4.23.2009

today is over on the east coast.

Wow. Today was a hot mess.

When I went to check in this morning, the guy only gave me 2 of my 3 boarding passes. He wasn't authorized to give me the 3rd, because he worked for United/US Airways, and the 3rd ticket was US Airways (idk), so he handwrote my baggage claim, and now my bag is "somewhere." Neither airline seems to care either, and they blame each other. In other words, my bag is probably gone for good. This had the potential to ruin my trip. I was so tired and frustrated that I wanted to just turn around. But I stuck it out, and things are sort of looking up. I love my hotel room, and its super relaxing here. Plus tomorrow is a new day. Every day is new, every day starts fresh. That's tomorrow.

But, if you're the praying type, I'd love your prayers, as today was meltdown madness day. God is teaching me something about responsibility and growing up, and I'm not a fan of those lessons.

Quote of the day (while driving around warner bros):
"Where do you film... ahhh... the steve urkel show?" (The guy who said this was one of those super cool euro guys).

Also- the house from Growing Pains is also the house the lady gets thrown out of in Gremlins. Yikes! Alex Keegan better watch himself!

off the grid

okay, not really...

but after much deliberation, i've decided to leave my laptop at home. this is HUGE in my life, as it has been by my side for the last 3 years. i'm taking deep breaths. anyway, i'll still be able to update on here, just not with pictures. if you want pics, you'll have to hit me up at twitter.

alright, since i'm 90 and since i have to leave at 2:30, goodnight!

Hooray for Hollywood! [feel free to sing along]

I'm going to try to post some while I'm on this magical adventure to the greater Los Angeles area. I'll definitely be posting to Twitter while i'm out there, so be sure to follow me there, or check out the twitter feed in the side bar here :)

My plans have already changed some regarding the trip- I was planning on going to see Matt Costa at the House of Blues in Anaheim, because, well, I like to sing his songs obnoxiously loud in my car. I didn't plan on half of California also wanting to see him, since like, 5 people in Indiana know who he is. Tickets are sold out, and now I have a free night. I looked for a replacement option, and the only other shows I've heard of are The Faint [electronica 80s pop], Mandy Moore [ummm...], and Twiztid [Insane Clown Posse/ Slipknot-ish]. COOL, GUYS. So i'm just going to bum around Hollywood Boulevard/ the Sunset Strip that night. I'll have 2 main items on my agenda:
1. Find some ridiculous yet wonderful gifts for friends/fam.
2. Avoid getting hit by Lindsay Lohan's car.
I'm excited for Sunday- going shopping at Larchmont and checking out The Little Seed. I love their blog, and I'm not going to lie, I've been praying to Jesus every night that I'll run into the owner. Soleil, if you read this, make sure you go to work on Sunday :) I'm also hitting up the Warner Brother Studio tour tomorrow afternoon, and I'm pretty geeked out about it. 2.5 hours of cinematic nerd bliss... Dear Jesus, please let there be all kinds of crazy tourists on it with me! It's so much more fun when everyone's into it.

It's been hitting around 100 degrees in Los Angeles this week, but there's supposed to be a cold front coming in, bringing it to high 60s- mid 70s, which is PERFECT. I'm unbelievably excited, and a little nervous, since it's the first time I've ever done anything like this by myself. Then again, that's exciting too- a challenge! I'm so grateful for opportunities like this. AMAZING. And since tomorrow's an EARLY DAY [leaving the house at 2:30 AM], I'll catch you guys tomorrow morning, giant bucket of coffee in hand.

who's hungry?

fyi- i didn't make these; i found it on another site haha. you take uncooked spaghetti, stick it through cut up hot dogs, then boil it all. i don't even want to think about how it tastes!

what is gigitastic?

A lot of you may be wondering why I switched from “Accidental Methodist” to “Gigitastic.” After all, “Accidental Methodist” is extremely catchy and unique [and clearly the author is extremely humble haha].

For some reason, I was starting to be known in the blogging world. People were paying attention which is awesome, but instead of quoting "Kara," they were quoting me as “the Accidental Methodist.” It started to make me feel weird... did I accidentally become Methodist? yeah, kind of. Do I want to be known as The Accidental Methodist? not so much. It was just meant to be a catchy title, not my whole identity, and after chewing on the issue for awhile, I decided to make a change.

Another weird thing about "Accidental Methodist" was that people were classifying my blog as a "Methodist Blog." If you've been around here for 5 seconds, you know that very rarely do I post anything having to do with being Methodist. In fact, this may be one of like, 3 posts, out of 254. So that was a little weird, too. I just don't want people to get the wrong impression about my thoughts being associated with the Methodist Church. That's all :)

So, the birth of gigitastic. It makes me smile, it's fun to say, and it reminds me of some of my favorite people ever, who gave me the nickname "Gigi" a few summers ago. It fits where I'm at in life now, and I love it. It'll still be the same posts- it's not like I'm going to stop talking about Jesus, Dogzilla, and my random adventures. It just won't be associated with a denomination. Because, as we all know, Dogzilla is Pentecostal =]

Ruh-roh

I have 2 projects to get done tonight- packing for LA and changing up the website.

Naturally, I'll play with the website until midnight, then try to pack without forgetting things.

ah, to be young and irresponsible :)

in other words, things are going to look JANKY around here tonight, because I'm a trial and error girl, rather than figuring it all out before publishing... so bear with me.

4.20.2009

completely geeked.

i'm looking for a place to host/build a website. I need it to be user friendly [drag and drop is my best friend], easy to manipulate, and relatively cheap.

i could be all "ohhh mac is my best friend, heeey iWeb" but i'd have to do a LOT of manipulating to make iWeb look like i want it [i.e. not like a mac website]. Plus, mac hosting is pricey, I feel like.

i'm also not a fan of GoDaddy's website tonight. does anyone know about their smart space?

i have BIG ideas folks, and i'm struggling to pull it all together. i've had the domain name purchased for a month now, but I'm not releasing it until i tie up these loose ends and like the final result.

maybe i'll just manipulate blogger... it's free, after all. i just am trying to satisfy my inner geek...

[sorry guys, this post is super geeked out. I just need to figure out this stuff, and i know I have a lot of friends who are secretly geeky too and might be able to help me].

True Story

When I was little, my brother took karate lessons for a year or two. He was big into calling the place "the DoJo" (the correct term for a karate place). And even though I was a pretty bright kid, I could never figure out why news anchors were so concerned with my brother's karate lessons.

See, I knew DoJo had some sort of asian influence in the name, so I assumed it was spelled all crazy. I didn't think twice about the fact that "DoJo" and "Dow Jones" may not be the same thing.

I've never told anyone that story before, but it just came to mind while watching Jeopardy (yeah, I'm not ashamed). Subconsciously, I always think of karate now when I see Dow Jones. I feel like this may have been the beginning of my history of financial confusion :) regardless, I thought you guys would get a good laugh out of that.

Have a great evening!

HSM Lock-In!

Last night was our senior high lock-in at the church, and it was one of the most fun nights I've had in awhile :) we had 28 kids spend the night, although very few actually slept (of course!).

We started out at Paige's Crossing to see "the lush funk spectrum" (a band 3 of my guys are in). They were really great and did a wide variety of songs, from "bubbly" by Colbie Callait to some pretty intense metal songs :) I was super proud of them because they also were able to share they're faith a bit, and that can be scary, especially towards your peers. After they played, we had free reign on Paige's, and we helped raise money for SADD.

Afterwards we headed over to the church, played Capture the Flag and a few rounds of Sardines, before half the kids passed out. The other half settled in to watch The Sandlot, and the last group to go to bed did so around 5:30, only to get up at 8!! Then we ate, cleaned up, and headed over to rake leaves for a church member. Only Jesus could have provided energy for that, and it was a lot of fun (and a lot of hard work). I'm so proud of my kids- they never stopped today, even though they were exhausted and hot. A true example of the hands and feet of Jesus!

When I got home, I found out Cleo had tried to make a jailbreak from the bedroom, so tomorrow afternoon I have a small home repair project. At first I was furious- she knows better. Then when I took her out, she got out of her collar and I thought I'd lose her. She didn't run, she stayed with me, and I got her collar on. Long story short, I'd rather have to replace a patch of carpet than my crazy little monster. She hasn't left my side since I got home, which is nice since I'm exhausted. She's a really good dog- she just has some separation anxieties :)

This weekend was great- I already miss my kids and can't wait to see them tomorrow. This is what youth ministry is all about:)

Quote of the Day

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. -Phil. 4:4-7

Encouragement

And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. -Phil. 4:19
God keeps speaking this into my life. It's not news that I struggle with being financially responsible, and during the current economic situation, I have to get my butt in gear. I have to trust that God is in control. He blessed my life today, and I wanted to share it with you guys so you could see that God truly provides for us, even when we're unsure of the outcome.

I've been struggling with being sick for awhile, but it's amped itself up in the last two weeks. It's felt like I've had an elephant sitting on my chest, and it's just been frustrating because my schedule doesn't really allow for rest. I've put off going to the doctor, because I always end up having to take some $100 prescription, and that's not really something I can foot the bill for these days. But, I knew I needed to see a doctor, so I headed over to Fort Wayne today.

I got checked out, and found out that my allergies are trying to basically suffocate me. My body thinks all air is bad air due to the allergens in it, so my trachea has tightened and my lungs are only taking in minimal amounts of oxygen, while storing "old air" in them. In other words, my body is naturally holding its breath. The doctor gave me a breathing treatment, a shot in the bum [which is NOT as funny as it sounds!], and two different prescriptions. I knew the bill would be huge. I knew it would be hard to swallow, but I also know how important it is to breathe, so I sucked it up.

My total bill for the day was $10. TEN DOLLARS! One prescription was free, insurance covered my doctor's visit, and the other prescription was only $10. GOD IS GOOD!
And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
Granted, my medicine makes me feel all out of whack [7 pills today, 6 tomorrow, 5 the next, etc etc], but God is good and I can breathe. I spent the afternoon reading [Multiple Blessings by Kate Gosselin], which felt so good since I haven't done that in a long time. Kate's book kept going back to the Philippians scripture and God's provision, and I knew He was speaking into my life.

Regardless of what happens in life, God is looking out for us. CLING to this promise! God is amazing and will NEVER let you go!
"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." -Romans 8:28

random update

1. quote of the day: "It's a skort- shorts in the back, skirt in the front. It's a mullet for your butt." -Demi Lovato

2. I GET TO SEE MATT COSTA ON APRIL 25TH! THE 88 WILL BE THERE TOO! I love them both dearly. They're playing at the Anaheim House of Blues while I'm in CA, so I'm pretty excited about this. I also found a hilarious tour to go on, but I'm going to keep it under wraps for right now.

3. web design stuff all day makes for a sore behind. but it's looking good, and it's about halfway done, so that's cool.

4. i hope today was the last of the cold and dreary sort for awhile.

5. ok, i'm horrible at secrets. the tour is "Haunted Hollywood" and you visit all these weird sites in Hollywood and the tour guides act ridiculous. It stops at the Roosevelt Hotel, the Nightmare on Elm St. House, and some other random places, like OJ's old house [which we saw last time]. kind of weird, but definitely will be interesting. Doing that on the first night there after hanging out on Hollywood Blvd all afternoon.

so yeah, that's what's up. not a whole lot on the update-front. it's going to be a busy rest of the month, but vacation is so close, i can taste it!

Accidental Megaphone.

Guys, I have a problem. I can't keep my mouth shut sometimes. I ranted a little about the SBC throwing statistics around about teens leaving church, and this is what happened:

The Dallas Morning News gave me a shout out, and BagofNothing.com mentioned my rant.

so, you know, that's weird. but it's cool too. I don't know how people find me on here, but that's cool. Welcome to the party :)

the insanity resumes

I was just looking at the calendar on the wall at my parents' house.

I leave for California in 12 days. AHH!

I definitely thought I had more time to prepare, and I clearly feel unprepared for this trip. God is awesome though, and he gave me a hyper-organized mother who has worked out the details for me. I just took care of the final piece- switching the rental car from Grandma-chic to 24 year old-chic, which didn't really need to happen. It's one of those vain things. But I don't want to be in the background of an episode of The Hills in a grandma car [clearly, i'm joking... but with my luck, something traumatic like that would happen].

My week is extremely busy, with little time to pull things together. Funny how vacations work like that. Life is even busier, and then you go and relax.

I don't even have a game plan for the trip. Here's what I do know:
1. I will be eating sushi at some point.
2. I will be doing a TON of driving.
3. I will not be doing all the touristy stuff, since Andrea and I covered that last time we were out there [Grauman's, Disney, Celebrity Bus Tours haha].

okay, i may end up on a bus tour. only because i have an unhealthy addiction to awkward situations, and that's chock full of them. everyone speaks a different language, and everyone wants to see Britney Spears walking down Sunset Blvd.

it's going to be amazing, and it's so close, but there's a lot to get through before we get to that point. starting with... EASTER! TOMORROW! YAY JESUS! I have an interesting post coming up about Him, based on something I heard this week. LOOK OUT, WORLD!

Since she is feeling neglected in the blogosphere

here are some more legitimate pictures of Alecia.

why Alecia is my favorite.

HEY GIRL HEY.

4.04.2009

we all need positive affirmation.

[or, "how i spent the last 10 minutes of my life- a photojournalistic effort."]

just say no.

I finally figured out why people call the Blackberry "crackberry." IT'S BANANAS!

I try to post on twitter or post comments on blogs, and half the time, the BB just decides it is off-duty, which would be great if I gave it lunch breaks and vacation time. But I don't, so you can imagine my frustration.

Kids, this is why you don't do drugs- because it affects your ability to do your job, RIGHT BLACKBERRY?!?

In other news, I have the best stylist ever. Libby gave me bangs tonight, and they're amazing. She's a genius with those shears. It's hard for me to find a good stylist because I have pretty high standards, but Libby knocks it out of the park everytime. Brillz. Almost as amazing as this ghost show I'm watching. Another key example of the effects of drug use...

(Fyi- totally kidding about all the drug references. These issues could be from a number of things, like drinking bad milk or getting dropped on your head, RIGHT BLACKBERRY? Ha!)

4.03.2009

pancake breakfast

i was trying to find a picture to put on our money jar of some cute pancake biz, and instead, i found these:

the second one is especially disturbing.

and because i love awkward things...

another video on the Kingdom of Heaven. I'm showing this on Sunday to my kids as an example of contrast... because I'm pretty sure this is certifiably nuts.

and in case you were wondering, this guy also did a video about hell that's equally as weird.

allnighter update

I forgot to tell you that i was successful in conquering my allnighter last Sunday. In fact, I went from 9:30 AM on Saturday to 4:30 PM on Sunday without sleep, which is unbelievably ridiculous and I don't recommend. BUT, it's nice to know that i'm not too old to be able to do that. I was worried about getting old, but as long as I can pull an allnighter, I can safely know that I'm still in my prime.

The Kingdom of God

I never really understood the importance of the Kingdom of God until my senior year at Bethel. I got into it late in the game, so to speak. However, it's such an important topic. If we can get our kids [even our congregations] to understand the importance of the Kingdom of God, it will make all the difference. This world isn't about us, and the Kingdom isn't something we can only attain posthumously. It's tangible today, right where we're at. It's about bringing up there down here, bringing God's ideals to earth and valuing what whe have.

it's huge. it's unbelievably important.
it's something we need to lean into.
